Folk Art of India

The term ‘folk paintings’ encompasses the art in Indian villages whereby people indulge in the art without any proper training. Indian folk art carries a unique history and individuality in itself. These are living traditions, intrinsically linked with the regional historic-cultural setting from which they arise. The folk paintings are produced in variety of styles and themes. Phad, Warli, Madhubani, Patachitra, Gond, Kalamkari, Pichwai, and Kalighat are some of the famous folk art paintings in the country. My work focuses mainly on two folk arts- Madhubani from Bihar State and Warli from Maharashtra state of India.

Fusion Paintings are created through a balanced fusion of two folk arts- Madhubani and Warli.  The themes of the paintings are non-mythological symbolic.

Madhubani Paintings

Madhubani art is a folk painting from Bihar state of India, practiced mostly by women. It uses vibrant colors and beautiful patterns through the intricate use of lines.

Warli Paintings

Warli is a folk painting from Maharashtra state of India. Warli art depicts social life, is created through very basic graphic expressions: a circle, a triangle and a square and is done only in white.
